A See Rock City barn with Burma-Shave sign

Past / Schoolhouses / Take it slow / Let the little / Shavers grow / Burma-Shave

Burma-Shave signs adorned American Highways from 1925 to 1963 in most of the lower 48. Typically, six small white on red rhyming signs posted in sequence along the roadside. Interstate highway speeds and Burma-Shave's sale to Philip Morris caused the demise of Burma-Shave signs. The complete text of the original jingles, as archived in The Verse by the Side of the Road, is available at Burma-Shave Jingles. Another repository is Burma Shave Slogans of the Fifties.

A Chicken playing baseball in 1948 experiment

LIFE Photo Archive

Google has announced a deal to host the entire archive of Life magazine photos. Only about 20% of the archive is online so far, but that's still two million photos. A photojournalism magazine, Life was published weekly from 1936-1972, and with varying frequency until 2007.

Deep Fried Bacon

Going Beyond Bacon Bits

It could be the opening of the first squeal of the aporkalypse. Chicago's Risque Cafe has added a new appetizer, battered deep-fried bacon dressed with white country gravy. This is in addition to the all-you-can-eat bacon nights at Chinaski's Bar and Whiskey Road that Porkopolis patrons already know about. However, bacon aficionados are quick to point out that chicken fried bacon strips has been a staple at Sodolak's Original Country Inn in Snook, Texas for years. J&D, the creators of Bacon Salt also introduced Baconnaise this month. Just in time for the holidays, The A.V. Club has posted instructions for making bacon-infused vodka for homemade BLTinis (with V-8) and not martha has directions for decorative edible bacon cups for breadless BLTs. For stocking stuffers there's Uncle Oinker's Gummy Bacon (Strawberry Meat Candy) from Archie McPhee who also carry a rack of bacon themed products like mints, wallets, bandages, and gift wrap. For the more adult child, Chicago-based Vosges Haut Chocolat has bacon bars and chocolate pigs. And for Barky, there's the Bubble Buddy that blows Sizzlin' Bacon, Peanut Butter and Bar-B-Q Chicken scented bubbles. For more baconized links and recipes check out the bacontarian.
